About

The 2023 Girls High School Golf National Invitational is heading to the brand-new PGA Frisco campus which has two championship golf courses, Fields Ranch-East and Fields Ranch-West, along with being the Home of the PGA of America.  This invite-only tournament field will be made up of the top high school golfers across the country competing at the “Modern Home of American Golf.”

PGA Frisco campus is also hosting the nationally-televised 2023 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship in May.  In addition, they will be hosting the 2025 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and the 2027 PGA Championship in Frisco, TX.  Old American Golf Club is the annual host to the Volunteers of America Classic on the LPGA Tour.  Three top venues for the 2023 Girls National Invitational in Texas!

Receiving an invitation to the National Invitational is quite an honor since only the best high school golf teams and individuals will receive invites based on state championship performance.  The Invitational brings together a wide variety of golfers from nearly all 50 states.  Public or private.  Suburban or rural.  Small or large.  All high school state championship teams, individuals, and their families have an opportunity to compete at the Invitational.

The Girls Invitational is a 3-day, 54 hole stroke play event including team and individual competition.  Competition rounds will take place on the PGA Frisco campus – Fields Ranch-East, Fields Ranch-West as well as Old American Golf Club.

History & Records

The National Invitational was first held in 2019 at Walt Disney World Resort with 300 boys and girls competing representing 43 states. The event has grown to a field of over 500 of the top high school golfers from nearly all 50 states over the past four years. Check out the full Invitational history

Qualifying

Our mission for the National Invitational is to continue being the nation’s most diverse and inclusive national junior golf tournament – showcasing as many unique states and golf teams as possible. In an effort to also showcase the strongest teams in high school golf at the 2023 National Invitational, we have revised the NHSGA qualifying standards for 2022-2023.

Team qualifying procedures

The state championship winning teams (1st place teams) may receive an invitation provided they meet the NHSGA qualifying standards based on field availability.

2022-2023 NHSGA Team Qualifying Standards*

  • Teams must win their respective state championship in order to be eligible.
  • Teams must have an average stroke differential of 45.0 per round according to the NHSGA State Rankings in order to be eligible.

*States with multiple teams eligible for the National Invitational, a bid will be extended to the highest ranking team from that state (across all divisions). In the event the highest ranking team does not accept their bid, the next state champion will be invited provided the above qualifying standards are met.

Teams competing in the Invitational will compete representing their state, NOT their high school. For example, if East Longmeadow High School wins the Massachusetts Division 1 State Championship, they will compete as Massachusetts (ELH) at the Invitational versus playing as ELHS Spartans. Since some teams are unable to get sponsorship from their state or their school, this system allows any team to compete without restriction.

State Championship Team Application
Teams who win their state championship will receive their official application for entry into the 2023 National Invitational via email by Mike McDonald (mike@highschoolgolf.org).

All applications will be reviewed state-by-state and teams will be invited based on the qualifying standards.  All teams are encouraged to fill out their applications asap so that they get full consideration for representing their state.

An email will be sent recognizing all state champions by Mike McDonald directly to their High School Golf Coach.  Parents, players or athletic directors are encouraged to work directly with their High School Golf Coach for more information about their particular application.

Individual qualifying procedures

The state championship medalists (1st place individuals) may receive an invitation provided they meet the NHSGA qualifying standards based on field availability.

2022-2023 NHSGA Individual Qualifying Standards

  • An individual must win their respective state championship in order to be eligible.
  • An individual must have an average stroke differential of 6.0 per round according to the NHSGA State Rankings in order to be eligible.

State Championship Medalist Application
Individuals who win their state championship will receive their official application for entry into the 2023 National Invitational via email by Mike McDonald (mike@highschoolgolf.org).

All applications will be reviewed state-by-state and medalists will be invited based on the qualifying standards.  All medalists are encouraged to fill out their applications asap so that they get full consideration for representing their state.

An email will be sent recognizing all state champion medalists by Mike McDonald directly to their High School Golf Coach.   Parents, players or athletic directors are encouraged to work directly with their High School Golf Coach for more information about their particular application.

2023 National Merit Application

Any teams or individuals who did not win their state championship, but feel like they deserve an opportunity to compete in the National Invitational are invited to submit a Merit Application for consideration.  Merit Applications will be considered after all the championships have been completed for their respective state.

Additional bids may be awarded to the top-ranked teams and individuals in the NHSGA rankings based on merit & field availability. The Selection Committee has the authority to award invites to specific states, regions, or non-US territories based on internal criteria and merit.

Tournament Scoring and Recognition

The Girls Invitational is a 3-day, 54-hole stroke play event including team and individual competition. Teams will be allowed to bring 5 players and we will take the top 4 scores for each day as the “team score”. In the event that a team only brings 4 players, all 4 scores will be counted toward the “team score”.

The World Amateur Golf Rankings will recognize the Invitational – WAGR coverage includes more than 10,000 players from 102 countries, and more than 4,000 ranking tournaments played in 104 countries.

The National Invitational will be recognized by the Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS). The Junior Golf Scoreboard typically receives results for over 2,100 tournaments worldwide and ranks approximately 10,000 – 11,000 players at any one time. The JGS is the foremost used junior golf ranking system by varsity college golf coaches since 1998.

AJGA PBE points will be awarded to the top finishers for both the Boys & Girls Invitational. Historically, the Top 15 finishers of the High School National Invitational have received Performance Stars according to their respective places.

hero boxes

Fields Ranch East at PGA Frisco is designed by Gil Hanse to maximize the terrain’s natural potential, providing a compelling, strategic challenge. Featuring smallish greens with gentle rolls, strong slopes and false edges that place a premium on accurate approach shots. Bunkers are naturally roughhewn and blend in with prairie grasses that surround the holes. Fairways feature the same grass as the rough, allowing the corridors to be widened or narrowed based on required conditions for championship golf or general day-to-day play.

Fields Ranch East incorporates the best of the land’s natural features, provides strategic variety, considers the wind and showcases characteristics that look and feel traditional in their presentation. The result is a championship-level course that will challenge and thrill the avid golfer.

Fields Ranch-West

5,700-6,000 Yards – Rating / Slope: TBD

hero boxes (1)

Fields Ranch West at PGA Frisco offers a fun, steady golf experience. Highlighting the Blackland prairie setting, the course rambles along Frisco’s Panther Creek, surrounded by native field grasses, live oak and mesquite trees – a true vision of the Texas ranch feel. Featuring more than 75 feet of elevation change, the highly strategic nature of the golf course encourages creativity from tee to green. Fairways are approximately 75 yards wide on average to promote enjoyment for golfers of all skill levels and encourage different routes of play.

Shot values are emphasized as players will look to navigate the large, undulating greens and calculated bunker placements. The greens are maintained to be fast with low-cut surrounds that further inspire creativity and a bump-and-run style play, while also necessitating accuracy and shot-making to produce scoring opportunities.

Old American

5,762 Yards – Rating: 75.4 – Slope: 142

Renowned golf course architect Tripp Davis along side 12-time PGA TOUR winner Justin Leonard designed a course that requires precision and power. Holes that are strategically designed to leverage varying wind conditions to create the ultimate balance. It possesses substance and is a true Player’s Course. Where strategic play is necessary and the ever-changing elements create a different experience each time it is played.

Some High School Athletic Associations are very restrictive on what high school golf teams can and cannot do. Since you will be representing your state at the “club level” and the event is taking place “out of season” most teams should be able to participate in the Invitational without restriction from their state high school athletic association.

If your high school is funding your trip or you are representing the school by wearing school uniforms, you may be subject to high school and state regulations.

The NHSGA is focused on ensuring future high school eligibility for golfers remains intact.  It is highly recommended that you check with your high school athletic association that no rules or regulations are broken that would affect your eligibility moving forward. The NHSGA is not responsible for sanctions placed on any team or player who breaks a school or state athletic association rule.
