Starting in 2016, The National High School Golf Association started ranking the top high school golf teams in the United States. All of these rankings are based solely on the state high school golf tournaments from the Fall 2016 and Spring 2017 seasons. All state tournament scores were calculated and ranked using the USGA Handicap formula to ensure a stable benchmark for golf course host sites. Calculation = ((Gross player score by day – rating) * 113/slope )). So who are the top 5 high school golf teams for the 2016-2017 season?
- Austin Westlake High School, Texas – Westlake High School is a public high school in Travis County, Texas, west of Austin. The school is a part of the Eanes Independent School District. Callan Nokes and Lane Grigg lead the golf team for Austin Westlake. The Westlake Boys won the 2017 6A Texas State Championship (Championship article). The team shot an impressive 286 average team total for the two day tournament (288 day 1 and 284 day 2). This tournament was played on a difficult golf course measured by slope and rating meaning the average player score of 71.5 over the two days is even more impressive.
- Columbus High School, Georgia – Columbus High School is a public high school located in Columbus, Georgia. It serves as one of the Muscogee County School District’s liberal arts magnet schools. The Blue Devils Golf Team is coached by Chris Parker and has a rich history over the years. The Blue Devils shot 279 in their 1 day division 4a state tournament beating the field by 15 shots.
- Center Grove High School, Indiana – Center Grove High School is a high school located in Greenwood, Indiana. A part of Center Grove Community School Corporation, it serves western Greenwood and most of Bargersville. Matt Rodman is the coach of the Trojans Team who won their first state golf title in 2017. - Mountain Brook High School, Alabama – Mountain Brook High School is a three-year public high school in the Birmingham, Alabama, suburb of Mountain Brook. It is the only high school in the Mountain Brook City School System. Alex Lockett coaches the Spartans Golf Team who is the top ranked high school golf team in Alabama and the only high school team in the state to shoot under par in their state golf tournament.
- Plano West High School, Texas – Plano West Senior High School is a public high school in Plano, Texas serving high school juniors and seniors. The school is part of the Plano Independent School District. The high school golf team is coached by Rick Hardison and came in 2nd place to Austin Westlake in the Texas 6A title which shows the strength of Texas High School Golf. Honorable Mention – Lone Peak High School in Highland, UT is ranked as the top high school in the US based purely on score if you do not consider taking the golf course played into consideration. Lone Peak has won 4 back to back state championships and last year set a record for the lowest total score in Utah High School Golf history.
